![]() Life is pretty quiet but excitement arrives when successful, enigmatic relative Uncle Charlie (Joseph Cotten) comes to stay. The type of place where people leave their front doors unlocked and everyone knows everyone. Young Charlie (played by Teresa Wright) lives with her "average American family" in the small town of Santa Rosa. It’s like our world now where everyone is obsessed with reality shows on the Investigation Discovery channel.Yet it could be argued that it had been hiding there all along, behind closed doors, since Shadow of a Doubt in 1943. He and his neighbor constantly discuss how to commit the perfect crime. ![]() In a funny bit of coincidence, Charlotte’s father fancies himself an amateur sleuth. ![]() Is Uncle Charlie a killer or is Hitchcock toying with us? He’s a little mysterious, but everyone loves him. A family is happy to see an absent uncle come home to his sister and her family. ![]() She craves excitement but like the old adage says, “Be careful what you wish for.” This quest leads her down the path of finding out the truth about her dear, sweet Uncle. The story takes place in a small town where young Charlotte (nicknamed Charlie like her loving uncle) is bored. The actor imbues his role with such charm that his portrayal ends up being pretty scary! In reality though, he could be the Merry Widow Murderer. Wright plays Cotten’s niece in Shadow of a Doubt. It’s interesting because on the surface, everyone loves Cotten’s character of Uncle Charlie. Teresa Wright and Joseph Cotten are phenomenal. Why do I love this particular production? The cast is superb. However, I have to say that his 1943 psychological thriller Shadow of a Doubt is at the top of my list. Because of the high quality of his work, it’s hard to choose a favorite film. I love Alfred Hitchcock from his movies to his TV shows, he is one of the best cinematic storytellers around.
